(1840-1898)

In 1876 he took over the direction of the Anatomical Institute where he gave a strong impulse to the development of the museum collection and perfected original techniques for the conservation of anatomical parts either dried or in a liquid.

His research activities were directed at various aspects of anatomy, in particular the study of the brain. He also developed interests in embryology, anthropology and primatology, testified by a collection of specimens and instruments.

Giacomini participated as a member of “Turin Ambulance” associated with the International Red Cross during the Third War of Independence and the Franco-Prussian War. Documents, photographs and medical-surgical instruments recall this aspect of his activities.

It is thanks to Giacomini that the Anatomical Institute and Museum were transferred to their present location. His skeleton is conserved in the Museum in accordance to his wishes, stated in his will.
